Morepen announces a Marketing Joint Venture with Menarini, Italy To launch the Menarini Glucometers in India
New Delhi, October 25, 2003

Morepen Laboratories Ltd. today signed a Marketing JV with Italian diagnostic majors, A. Menarini to market their world-renowned Menarini Glucometer range under the Dr. Morepen brand umbrella in India. Menarini is a pharmaceutical major established in 1959 and is ranked amongst the top 20 Pharma companies in Europe. In the Self - Diabetes market Menarini diagnostics has been placed in top five globally. As per the joint venture agreement, in the first phase Dr. Morepen would be introducing the Glucometers from Menarini under the brand "Dr. Morepen HomeHealth" this would be followed by manufacturing of these products in India with technological inputs from the JV partner.

Mr. Sushil Suri, CMD Morepen Laboratories, said, "This is another momentous step in taking the brand promise of Dr. Morepen " Health in your hands" further as now the diabetic patients can monitor their sugar levels regularly and accurately at home with Glucometers that have the latest Biosensor technology."

In India, the Homehealth Glucometer would be introduced in two designs, GlucoMen Glyco and GlucoMen PC. Both the products are safe and simple to use with biosensor and electrochemical feature, which work on the concept of electron capture. The Glucometers would be priced at Rs. 3995 and Rs. 4850 respectively and they come in vibrant colours and unique shapes hence fitting the bill of lifestyle companions perfectly.

GlucoMen Glyco designed with the latest technology currently available in the market. A patient can get a very precise test result even at the lowest concentration. There is a built-in-sensor automatically compensates for changes in environmental temperature. The quality of the results is controlled through the use of a check strip. A strip ejector feature is provided in order to avoid contamination from the blood. Automatic on/off switch is activated on insertion or removal of the sensor strip. The Gluco Men PC also has a strip ejector feature in order to avoid contamination from the blood, also an optical PC interface to download the date of the 350 memories and date and times function and 15 reading averaging function

The worldwide market for self testing of whole blood glucose products was approximately $4.5 billion in 2000 & is forecast to exceed $5 Billion by 2002 & $8 billion by 2010 at a CAGR of 12%. Where, in India the market size was pegged at $ 20.29 million in 2000 and $ 22.95 million in 2001 with a steady growth rate of 13-15% per annum. Presently the four key players in this business in the country are Roche, LifeScan, Bayer and Abott with market share of 41 %, 24%, 14.3% and 8% respectively.

Diabetes is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death in most developed countries. The worldwide diabetic population in 1985 was reported to be 30 million, which has dramatically risen by almost 500% to 175 million in 2001. According to International Diabetic Federation developing countries will experience a dramatic increase of 170% rise by 2025 and the highest rate of increase is expected to occur in India (+195%).
